My First Day of Class

I sometimes think my success as a teacher is a complete fluke! I am unusually anxious about the kids in my class and whether or not I will be able to handle them! Every year, obviously, has turned out fine! I haven't had any complaints and a lot of praise from parents. Still, there is always a chance that it is not me, but luck that brings this about! So as usual, I had first day jitters! The photos above are of the last three students that were not at "Meet Your Teacher Day". So that rounds out the 8 kids that I am starting with. One will be arriving in October, due to a new baby coming. So far in my class, two boys are going to be a small challenge. One is constantly talking and interrupting, the other is just all boy with a lot of rough edges (hard on toys and everything else!) Two of the girls were friends last year and one was keeping the new girls away (a little *itchy if you as me!) She will be one to watch as well. There are about 3 that are pretty reserved, but very sweet. One of which seems to not really understand a whole lot of what is going on. I was told he was speech delayed, but that doesn't really seem to be a problem. His problem is more distraction and he just is slow doing projects and walking. Part of it could be that he is brand new to the school and he is taking it all in. They draw a "Me" picture and his was more along the lines of an older three year old. His crayon grip is weak, so I will be working with him on that this year. Possibly a pre-k candidate. But who knows he may improve enough to go on to Kindergarten! Well, that is about it for now. Wish me luck! Or better yet, pray!

One of your students is having a baby? Wow.
I went to Patrick's open house at his classroom. They all had drawings on the wall and a short essay on how they spent summer vacation. My favorite was Eduardo's. "This summer I threw eggs at a guy. He started to chase me so I had to throw eggs behind me as I ran" His illustration showed just that.

What a crack up!!
And no, the MOM is having a new baby and for some reason she felt it was better to thrust her son into school AFTER the new baby comes so that he has two things changing! Here is a new baby brother, and now...go to school. In other words, "we have a new baby now, so we don't need you at home!" Not the smartest thing to do in my opinion. Our secretary in our office tried to explain that it would be better to start him in September that way when the new baby comes he already has one constant (school) that won't change on him! But mom was adamant about keeping him home! So I will get to deal with all of the emotions that come from a lot of change all at once!

You will do great :) Most of what the kids need is the consistancy you'll provide, and behaviors will fade once they figure out what you expect from them. Most kids are happy to do what they can to please their teacher. MOST kids...

Anyway - have a great year & work your magic with these little treasures :)

I thank you, my sis, for all of your support! I am grateful that you have such faith in me! Mom does too!

I have decided that the two boys that I said would be a small challenge will end up being a couple of the smartest students, the one that will be a huge challenge is the speech delayed boy. He proved today to be very difficult. We did a ripped paper project and after showing him how to rip the paper he just stopped and sat there. Then I got him started again and then when he did do one piece, he would yell over and over again, I did it, look, I did it, look, I did it! Then I would say, "good job, keep going!" He would need help to start again, then one more piece and it would start all over again!
I talked to mom and she said he isn't much into doing crafts. An understatement to be sure!

Keeka---one of my favorite sayings is from Henry Ford--"Who you are isn't a function of your past failures, but your latest departure" I always think what a great example you are in this. I sort of pigeon-holed you uears ago as someone that wanted nothing to do with kids, now it's your biggest contribution.

You are a great friend! Thanks!
I feel much better after the first week of school! There are always challenges but I feel like I am in control and that is the biggest thing I worry about!
